MHRD to offer courses in 10 languages for students under SWAYAM

Under the Centre government’s new education initiative SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds), a Web portalthe prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), and all central universities will soon offer free courses through Massive Open On-line Courses (MOOCs) . The scheme includes programmes for Classes 9, 10, 11, 12, Diploma, Certificate and a few semester-wise subjects. The courses will be offered in more than 10 languages.

Under SWAYAM,  students will get an opportunity to study Classes 9, 10, 11, 12, Diploma, Certificate and some semester-wise subjects by central universities, IITs, IIMs and other institutions at free of cost in 10 Indian languages. It will be supported by a mobile app. We are hopeful that there are private institutes that want to get involved in the project under public good, so that more educational opportunities can be given to students across the country,

Besides, the HRD Ministry  also announced “The Global Initiative of Academic Research”. Under this initiative International faculty has been invited to teach in India by facilitating joint research projects and encouraging a dialogue between Indian students and foreign academicians. This year over 400 foreign academicians have come into our institutions and the government is hoping that it exponentially grow in to up to 1,000. The government is also making efforts to ensure the availability of study material in over 22 Indian languages and later up to 100 languages across various education streams.

MOOCS or massive open online courses have made access to top university-level content for every learner possible. By providing free online courses on demand, MOOCS enable learners to learn from anywhere irrespective of their situation as long as they have internet access. Statistics from major MOOC providers show that India is a home of second largest audience for MOOCS after US, which brings great challenges and opportunities for the use of such courses in India.

The SWAYAM platform is specifically designed benefit students from remote area, working professionals as well as college dropouts. Students will get ‘Verified Certificate’ after successfully completion of courses. However, it is not clear if these certificates will be accepted for employment purposes.  SWAYAM is a platform for new India where quality education is affordable and self-learning is fruitful not only for enrolled but also for professionals and dropouts. With quality content, best online lectures, great discussions, knowledgeable assessment quizzes, SWAYAM will provide great opportunity to Indian students to learn without fearing from failure.
