Indian Institute of Management- Calcutta, the premier institute is planning to start a post graduate program in business analytics. The program will focus on using analytics in finance, marketing or business. The existing Post Graduate Program in Computer Aided Management (PGDCM) will be merged with the Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) and 50 seats allotted for the PGDCM course will be converted to PGDM seats.
Currently there are two programs under PGP — PGDCM and PGDM. Students were admitted to the two year PGDCM program on the basis of the Common Admission Test (CAT) which will also be the requirement for entry into the PGDM course. But, in the current scenario the PGDCM course which was introduced 22 years back for the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in management is no longer relevant. Further, the study of information and communication technology is a very common thing in every educational aspect, including business and management education. The institute is exploring different possibilities to initiate a program relevant in today’s business world to replace the PGDCM course. So, the management of the institution has decided to merge both.
According to sources at the institute, the program on analytics may be a two-year post graduate full time residential diploma. The intake will not be from CAT. Instead, the institute may design its own admission criterion and hold a separate admission test. IIMC is also exploring opportunities to come up with the program jointly along with other eminent institutions. A maximum 50 of students will be admitted for this course too.
